Private vs. Public Schools in Southern California

Today more and more families are looking into the educational options of attending home schooling, or attending a private school; rather than attending a state-operated public school. There are many and a varied number of reasons, some of which are to expose the students to the religious and moral values of the family and/or the church, the concentrate on a particular subject that is not being taught sufficiently in the public schools, or to give students an opportunity to prepare more thoroughly for college, a trade school, or a specific interest or career. Information on public schools in Orange County is readily available. According to State Superintendent of Public Education in California, Tom Torlakson, the mission of California public education is to provide a world-class education for all students, coordinate educators, schools, parents, and community to prepare students for life. The mission statement sounds good, but with such a huge task force overseeing education too often the administration of the department takes more precedence than the actual educating of the student.

According to the state’s own reporting, only 3 out of 4 students who started public school in 2006 graduated with their class in 2010. Many of these students just barely graduated, scoring well below the national average in academics. Reporting has also been done to indicate the high drop-out rate of junior students who never even reach high school and are therefore no calculated as part of the high school drop-out rate.

As families nation-wide are becoming more interested in education, Orange County, California, is no exception. More and more private schools in Orange County are operating each year. Some of the most sought-after, prestigious private schools in Orange County are affiliated with religion. One of the types of education that parents are considering for their child is Catholic school in Orange County.

The Catholic Church nation-wide has long been a supporter of Christian-based education, and as such has offered a solid education to Catholic as well as students of other religions and creeds. Catholic schools in Orange County are no exception.

Mr. Gregory Dhuyvetter, Superintendent of Orange County’s Catholic schools, reminds present and prospective families that these private schools in southern California recognize the trust that families put in them. As would be expected, the education is based on the sound principles of Christianity with emphasis on building character and setting examples of a Christ-like life. This type of education also includes a thorough grounding in the basics of math, reading, comprehension, composition, reasoning, language, science and liberal arts.

Catholic schools in Orange County utilize an accreditation process that continually reviews and revises the educational programs to keep up with the needs of the students and their families as administrators, educators, parents, work together to encourage students to meet and exceed their highest educational goals.
