The Dynamics Of White Vs Pink Noise

Ordinarily, the word “noise” might refer to any unwanted sound, but in technical terms “noise” is specifically classified as the negative disruption of a wanted signal. Noise can easily be used to block, disorganise or completely alter the meaning of a message in both human and electronic communication, and this characteristic can be turned to our benefit, especially when we want to prevent unwanted communication in the form of eavesdropping.

A number of noise models are used in analysis and it usually emerges that there are different types of sound produced. These various sounds have been categorised into colours. This categorization stems from a loose analogy between the spectrum of frequencies of sound waves present in the sound. If notion is that if a sound were translated to light waves, it would produce a light which would either be White, Pink, Brown, Blue, Violet or Grey. Two of these, White and Pink are probably the most prominent with various contrasts and comparisons existing between them.

White noise is a mixture of sound waves extending over a wide frequency range. In linear space it produces a flat frequency spectrum with a signal that has equal power in a band of whatever bandwidth. This will mean that there will be a similar, if not identical, amount of sound power range between 60 HZ – 80 HZ and 2800 HZ – 2820 HZ. Human hearing or response of audio/visual equipment is ‘white’ since it has a flat spectrum over a defined frequency band. White noise is often used by emergency vehicle sirens due to its ability to cut through background noise making it easier to locate. It is also used for frequency response testing of amplifiers and electronic filters.

Pink noise on the other hand has a spectrum which is flat in logarithmic space and has the same power in bands that are proportionally wide. The implication of this is that between 40 to 60 Hz there is a certain power; this power is the same as in the band from 4000 – 6000 HZ. Pink noise could also be called Flicker noise and is found in many natural phenomena such as nuclear radiation, electron flow through a conductor, or even in the environment.

While there are many devices that employ so-called white noise for the purpose of conversation masking in offices or sound therapy to help aid sleep, many machines actually employ pink noise, which while still beneficial, is somewhat softer and less disruptive. However, as there are really no simple mathematical models to create pink noise it is usually generated by filtering white noise. Because the idea of white noise is more commonly known to the public most sound disruption units are labeled as white noise devices, despite the fact that many actually employ pink noise.
